Apple iPad: The Low-Price Leader?

No one will ever accuse Apple of being a cheap brand, but the company's iPad tablet may prove to be more affordable than the first generation of Android schedules, particularly the Dell Streak and Samsung Galaxy Tab. Apple, a boon for snip hunters? It's true if your new Android tablet is tied to a 3G data contract, a time-honored tactic (at least in the United States) that lowers the up-front cost of the device, but tethers the consumer to a pricey two-year wireless data plan.

Take the Streak, for instance. With a two-year AT&T contract, Dell's 5-inch tablet starts at $300. To get that price, however, you'll need to ink a voice and data plan. At Glade's site, the cheapest option is a $55 per month deal: 450 voice minutes for $40; and 200MB data for $15. That comes to $1620 for two years of Dell Streak usage: $1320 for the 3G plan; and $300 for the tablet.

Don't want a 3G contract? In that case, the Flash costs $550. Shockingly, that's $50 more than the 16GB (Wifi-only) iPad.

Which would you rather buy? Of course, the Apple and Dell tabs are very different beasts. Possibly, the Strip is more of a freakishly large smartphone than a tablet. The iPad has none, although that's likely to change soon. Given a choice, most people would choose for the iPad, with its decent design and larger display, over the relatively clunky Smudge which happens to cost more.

To be fair, let's price the iPad with 3G service. The 16GB iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G costs $629 up front--more than twice the Streak's price. AT&T charges $15 per month for 250MB of data. So over three years, the least you'd pay for an iPad with 3G service is $989.

The Dell tab cost $631 more to operate over two years than the iPad. Rather then Of course, you could cut costs by using the tablet as a cell phone too. But with its 7 inch display, the large tablets pc is awfully big for a phone.

Galaxy Mystery

The first Samsung Galaxy Tab models will include both Wifi and 3G. They'll be offered by all four major U.S wireless carriers, none of which has announced pricing details at this time. The Industry watchers expect the supported units to sell for around $300, however.

If you want a Galaxy Tab with Wifi only, there's bad and good news. The good is that Samsung plans to release a Wi-Fi only model; the bad is that it won't say when.

While every business is different, is it safe to say that many companies would choose a Wifi only tablet over a 3G with Wi-Fi model, mostly if the 3G option requires a long term data contract. Since the introduction of the Windows 8 and manufacturers’ focuses have been primarily on convertible laptops and hybrids. Tablets Slate has been a bit of reconsideration, and for one big reason: price. Compared to $500 iPad’s and $200 Nexus 7′s, who in their right mind is going to shell out $1,000 for a Windows tablet?

On paper, the W700 is attractive. It’s an 11.6” tablet that weighs just two pounds, running full Windows 8 (not RT) 4GB of RAM on a 1.7GHz Core i5, and a 128GB SSD put it on par with most of the convertibles on the market, although it’s have a single USB 3.0 port and a little HDMI connector are your only options for connectivity.

The 1920x1080 screen is highly detailed and very bright, and it’s responsive to compliments and taps. It have a good Battery life, at over six hours, is nothing to sneeze at, either.

Performance is also very good. General application benchmarks were about 15 percent below what I’ve been seeing on top-tier Windows 8 hybrids tablet PC, but it’s speedy enough so you won’t spend long waiting for apps to load or processes to complete. It’s an altered story, as usual, with anything relating graphics beyond the level of cut the Rope. On the few pictures oriented standards the W700 will run at all (most crashed or wouldn't even load). Scores were at shock bottom versus the competition.

One of the big problems with HD class resolution like this on a small screen is how difficult it is to use regular Windows 8, where checkboxes, tiny menu text and radio buttons can turn what should be simple choices into an agonizing. This is especially true on the W700 tablet PC, and getting around inside the Windows Desktop beyond at the Start screen is a real challenge for tablet. To that end, Acer provides a workaround in the form of a Bluetooth-connected keyboard, cradle and external, which are included with the device. Just slide the W700 tablet PC into the cradle to elevate it to a 70 degree viewing angle, or flip the elastic stand that shots into the back of the cradle around to take the angle down to 20 degrees.

This is a usability enhancement, but only modestly so. The chintzy plastic support itself is actually pretty useless, simply replicating the USB port on the W700 tablet and providing channels so audio can discharge. There is no added battery in the support, but you wouldn't want to take it with you anyway, as it more than doubles the 13m thickness of the W700.

Google Nexus 7 Price & Specifications

The new Nexus 7 is a bit pricier compared to the last year’s offering. The 16 GB version costs $230 now while the 32 GB is available for $270. That’s more expensive compared to last year’s tablets which cost $200 (8 GB) and $250 (16 GB).
